The #escapers15 teams have arrived on the glittering Gold Coast for our final day of challenges and let me tell you, they are doozies!
Many of us are going to have to conquer our personal fears today… Some of us are heading up to the top of Q1 and the SkyPoint Climb, Australia’s highest external building climb.
Some of us are heading out into the waves for surfing lessons. And some of us are heading around and around and upside down on the crazy thrill rides at iconic Gold Coast theme parks, Dreamworld and Movie World.
Resplendent in fetching superhero capes and masks it is to the latter that I go with my Team
Australia cohort Deb and the lovely guys from Team Singapore and Team Indonesia.
And it is here in the penultimate moments of #Escapers15 that the men are really sorted from the boys (so to speak) with some competitors descending into panic when told that our final challenge is to hit the most extreme of the thrill rides.
And by “some” I mean me.
Seriously, if I’d been any more chicken I’d have sprouted feathers. Dangle me from the top of a skyscraper, shove me into the surf, anything please, but not this! Again, my nerves don’t stem from being flung about at high speed on a rollercoaster… I have small children and trying to get them dressed and fed in the morning is more dizzying than that. No, it’s that stupid claustrophobia again and I’m in a fit of anxiety at the idea of being strapped and trapped into the rides. I’m not alone though, the gorgeous Alex of Team Indonesia is a thrill ride phobic and has turned a fetching shade of grey at the very thought.
But we’re both determined to take one for our respective teams and climb nervously on to the Batwing Spaceshot. As soon as they strap me in, I just about pee my pants. In fact, if it weren’t for the awesome hand holding skills of Team Singapore superstar and thrill ride aficionado Dennis, I would have. I am still questioning whether I can actually go through with the ride when suddenly I’m so busy being flung up and down at eleventy billion kilometres an hour that I forget to be claustrophobic.
THIS IS FREAKING AWESOME!!
Having survived the Batwing Spaceshot, I’m psyched up for another ride so join Dennis and Deb on the Green Lantern Coaster. Poor Alex is close to a coronary so elects to sit this one out but I’m totally up for it.
For about three seconds.
I sit in the roller coaster car and as soon as the protective safety bar comes down over my head, I’m drowning in panic and throwing it back up, run screaming like the hounds of hell are at snapping at my feet. I try again with Superman Escape but the hour-long queue means we’re not going to make it by our deadline. And anyway, odds are I’d just soil myself again. Instead I admit defeat and leave the thrills to dashing Dennis and daring Deb.
Game over, I mourn my lost point and pride and hope my teammate wont kick my wussy butt.
On checking in to our sumptuous suites at the stunning five-star Sofitel Gold Coast Broadbeach any remaining concerns about my cowardice fly out the window, or at least over the balcony, looking as it does form the top floor of the Sofitel over the Gold Coast and the Pacific Ocean.
This place is incredible and once more I am, quite literally, on top of the world as I put my feet up and nibble on a plate of strawberry treats.
And before I know it, it’s time for a grand gala dinner, the announcement of the winners and the end of the epic adventure that has been #Escapers15. Like every single person who participated, the amazing experiences we’ve enjoyed and the new friendships we have made along the way means that we are all winners… which is a good job really because the selfie-challenged Australian team don’t stand a chance against our gorgeous go-go-gadget laden competitors.
We take a trip down memory lane….
And then it’s time to announce the winners. The judges have been very secretive these last few days about the points tally, but my money is on Team Singapore for the win. But no… The glamorous gals from Team Malaysia place third, my fellow thrill ride phobic Alex and Team Indonesia place second, and the first place goes to… wait… say what? Australia!
Somehow, even with our aversion to selfies, distinct lack of tech and questionable fitness, Team Australia has managed to take home the gold – and amazing Accor and Scoot prizes – in #Escapers15.
But the best prize of all is arriving home and sharing the spoils of victory with these super people…
BoyEatsWorld was hosted by the fabulous folk at Tourism Queensland, Accor Hotels and Scoot Airlines on the awesome Australian leg of our #escapers15 adventure.
