How could anyone not like a High Tea? I mean, it is basically a huge tower of food, all for one person. It doesn’t get better than that. And I think that the English Afternoon Tea at Raffles Hotel Singapore has to be the best of them all.
For starters, they named the place after me, so it must be good. And secondly, along with the tower of treats, they have an additional buffet with miles of food so you can keep topping it up. Epic.
The Raffles is one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever seen. It’s very old fashioned and pretty. There’s miles of shiny white marble and dark timber and it even manages to stay posh with us being silly in it after slurping down a couple of Singapore Slings (virgin) in the Long Bar.
But its not so posh that it isn’t friendly. The staff are really nice and helpful and treated my sister and I with as much respect as they did any adult. And having been to a lot of hotels with my mum, that is unusual. In a good way.
We were the first people to arrive in The Tiffin Room, where they hold afternoon tea, and it was so elegant and all the tables were set so nicely, that it looked like they were preparing for a royal party. Either that or they knew I was coming. I mean, it is MY hotel after all!
Because it was hot we skipped the tea part for delicious fruits juices, Although Mum traded that for a glass of French Champagne.
The three-tiered silver afternoon tea stand was packed with yummy treats including soft sandwiches filled with cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon and other tasty fillings. There were mini pastries and tiny pretty cakes. And I thought we’d already done pretty darn well when the waiter told us that there was still more to eat down at the buffet. Oh, yeah.
There were huge piles of fresh warm scones with thick clotted cream and homemade jam plus platters of pretty cakes and sweet treats like fruit and pastries.
My sister was in a happy sugar frenzy over all the flowery cakes but I was more interested in all the awesome looking savoury bites like tiny croque monsieur squares that were dripping with cheese.
But, even though Afternoon Tea at Raffles is a traditionally British experience, there were plenty of local treats to, and I couldn’t resist filling plate after plate with perfect siu mai and plump juicy dumplings.
If there is such a place as food heaven, I think it might look like this.
