Built in the late 19th century, the sumptuous 1709-seat neo-Renaissance Vienna State Opera House is one of the world’s great opera houses, hosting the world’s largest repertoire of opera and ballet performances. Sugarpuff and I were lucky enough to catch Richard Wagner’s ground-breaking opera Tristan und Isold, which proved a fascinating introduction to the Opera for my daughter. Kids under 14 years of age are offered concession prices on ticket for most performances and concerts, and the opera house offers a range of additional family-friendly performances to introduce little ones to classical music. Just remember to pack something a little bougie to walk the sumptuous Opera House’s red carpet, as the Viennese like to dress up for the Opera.

The spectacular Baroque church, also known as the Church of St. Charles Borromeo, was constructed between 1716 and 1737 and is famed for its grand architectural style, with two towering domes and a classic Corinthian colonnade. A performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Orchestra 1756, a classical period instrument ensemble, in the stunning frescoed church proved to be the ultimate in sensory overload and turned my rock’n’roll loving twosome into classical fans.

Vienna Boys’ Choir at Das MuTh
